Trattoria Madonnina: Reviews & Ratings
The food was very good and lived up to the restaurant’s reputation. However, the service felt rushed and uneven. From the beginning, I was told I would have about an hour, but I ended up leaving after 35–40 minutes. Dining alone, I clearly felt treated differently compared to other tables, with less attention and a more hurried approach. Regardless of party size, every customer deserves the same level of respect and care. I would return for the food, but the service could improve.
Make a reservation ahead of time and ask for a table outside. The food is classic, non-touristy Milanese and absolutely worth it. The gnocchi special was bursting with flavor and the risotto alla Milanese with luganega was outstanding. The atmosphere itself is great and the dishes are fantastic, but the service was downright unfriendly and it’s a bit pricey for what you get. Even so, I’d still go back just for that risotto.
We went early for dinner, so we got a table without a reservation, which was good. The food was good, and the portions were really big. The only downside was the not-so-kind and professional staff. There was one waitress going around the tables acting like she was lost, also staring at us. We felt very uncomfortable at the moment. At some point during dinner, a musician entered the space playing a harmonica and, after finishing, went from table to table asking for money.
Nice food, and a lovely outside space. You could tell lots of Italians went there to eat, and our Airbnb host said that it was traditional Milanese food. The risotto was my favourite thing we tried. The potatoes with the pork cutlet were delicious. The bread delivered to our table seemed quite old, and was very dry on the outside. The pork cutlet had a huge bone in it, which I'm not used to, and also came with no sauce, so tasted very dry. The waiting staff also seemed very bored and disinterested. I can understand why but it was a little jarring.
I am really glad that we had the chance to visit this place. The food was incredibly good and the atmosphere was perfect. You can feel the energy of all the history. The pricing was okay. This restaurant is a recommended one for sure. Don’t forget to make a reservation before you go.
It’s 35 degrees in Milan right now and two best friends come together to share 3 main courses — one hailing from Bohemia and the other from the brexited town. Wow. We craved tradition and we had been directed to Trattoria Madonnina to quench the thirst. It was exquisite. We ordered two dishes from the main menu and one from the daily special. It came quickly and did not disappoint. Staff were very attentive but did lie and say the ceiling fan was broken, but then did eventually switch it on. We started to feel high from how delicious the food was and how much sweat was beading on our necks. To top it all off an accordion player graced us with a few beats while we ate dessert. ARRIVEDERCI!! Dog friendly.
Ah, a Milanese institution, or so it seems, judging by the sheer, elbow-to-elbow crush of humanity that descends upon it every day. We, by some stroke of luck (or perhaps a well-placed, charming smile), snagged a table at 7pm, a feat I wouldn't recommend attempting without a reservation. The place vibrates with a kind of frenetic energy, the staff a well-oiled machine, deftly managing the throngs with impressive efficiency. They are efficient, and they need to be, as the place is a popular location for a reason. The food, overall, delivers. The veal tongue starter, with its verdant garnish, was a bold, almost confrontational experience, a bit too "farmyard" for my delicate sensibilities. However, the risotto, a saffron-tinged masterpiece studded with sausage and cheese, more than made up for it. It was a plate of pure, unadulterated comfort, a subtle symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. And the pork Milanese? A hefty, golden slab of crispness, a testament to the city’s culinary pride. It was a generous portion, and very well executed. Madonnina is a place where the atmosphere is as much a part of the experience as the food, a bustling, vibrant slice of Milanese life. Just remember to book. Or, you know, perfect your charming smile.
I tried risotto ossobuco, it was really tasty but very big portion. I went solo that's why I had no chance to try other things and bottle of wine. It would be even better with large groups. They have a nice authentic outside section for good weathers.
